ABSTRACT:
This paper takes as its starting point the current criticisms of journalistic practice—as undemocratic, too closely aligned with politicians, and disconnected from civic life—to suggest that reform efforts must focus on actual production routines in order to be transformative. The remainder of the paper focuses on the practice of interviewing by reviewing journalism texts specifically and social science research more generally. This review yields some insights into the shortcomings of interviewing, as they are relevant to the criticisms of journalism mentioned above. An alternative approach to interviewing—one that places the interviewee at the center—is then explained and demonstrated through a research exemplar.
