ABSTRACT:
In this paper written for the interdisciplinary journal of the Toda Institute for Peace and Policy Research, the authors caution that attempts to respond to the worldwide resurgence of interest in dialogue will fall far short in part because of constraining conceptualizations. Most approaches place the burden of dialogue on participants asking that they be motivated, disciplined, and well-intentioned. This is equally so, the authors suggest for both dominant conceptualizations of dialogue—the rhetorical approach and the representational approach. In the former, focus is placed on outcomes—better answers, for example. In the latter, focus is placed on hearing diverse voices. The authors suggest that these dominant models are caught in a host of dialectical paradoxes which result in a ricochet between rhetorical versus representational approaches. The authors call for building a bridge between the approaches by refocusing conceptualizations of dialogue on proceduring.
