ABSTRACT:
In this paper, Dervin continues her exploration of the ways in which theorizings about the potential impacts of new communication technologies—both positive and negative—are hampered by a central assumption that the mere ability to move information about in greater quantities, at faster speeds, and to more remote locations will enable those who have technological access to be better informed than was ever before possible. Dervin calls this assumption an “illusion” and in this chapter interrogates the illusion focusing in particular on conceptualizations of information. Dervin argues that traditional conceptualizations of information focus on information as thing that is transmitted, manufactured, or processed. A more useful conceptualization requires that the term be reconceptualized in communication terms.
