ABSTRACT:
Richard F. Carter, emeritus professor of the School of Communication, University of Washington, developed in the early 70s an iconic “picturing” language for capturing the nature of the relationships between entities referred to in usual linear language statements but which cannot be well stated given the constraints of linear language. Carter has called his adjunct language PIX (Carter, 1979). This paper represents Dervin’s attempt to present Carter’s version of “picturing” as she understood it in the early 1970s.

In developing this guide, Dervin drew upon instructional tools created by Richard Carter, Manji Pendakur, Keith Stamm, and Diane Tefft—all of whom were at the University of Washington School of Communication in 1975.
